FAQ
frequently asked questions about the handpan
What is a handpan?
A handpan is a modern musical instrument that usually consists of two steel half-shells connected to each other. It produces melodic and percussive sounds by striking the surface. It is often played with the hands and is known for its unique, spherical sound.
How do you play a handpan?
A handpan is played with the hands by striking the different sound fields on the top. There is no set technique, but most players use a mixture of soft and forceful strikes, as well as finger taps, to produce different tones and rhythms.
When sitting, the low notes are directed outwards and are played with the index or middle fingers. The high notes are closer to the body and are played with the thumbs.
How much does a handpan cost?
The price of a handpan varies depending on the manufacturer, size, material and craftsmanship. Prices can range from 400 to 3,000 CHF. Entry-level models are often cheaper, while high-quality, handmade handpans are more expensive. However, it is worth investing in a handpan that is suitable for advanced players. It is easier to play. You will not regret it.
Where can you buy a handpan?
Handpans can be purchased from specialty music stores, online through retailer websites, and directly from the manufacturer. In Switzerland, retailers like ZenDragon.ch are a good place to start. ZenDragon has one of the largest selections of handpans.
How do I properly care for my handpan?
Handpans should be cleaned regularly to prevent rust and dirt. Use a soft cloth and special handpan cleaning products to clean the surface. It is important to protect the handpan from moisture and extreme temperatures to prolong its lifespan and avoid it going out of tune.
My handpan is out of tune, what do I do?
Sela handpans can go out of tune like any handpan due to intensive playing and strong temperature fluctuations. If the instrument is out of tune, you can use our retuning service. We take care of the entire process. After being sent, the handpan will be perfectly retuned within a few weeks and sent back to you. The costs per handpan and tuning process are up to €249.90 net, depending on the effort involved, exclusively for Sela handpans (including return shipping within Europe). The transfer of risk for shipping and return takes place when the instrument arrives or is sent to our premises.
How many tones does the handpan have
The number of tones on a handpan can vary, but most handpans have between 7 and 9 tones . These tones are arranged in a circular pattern on the top of the instrument. Some handpans can also have 11 to 13 tones , with these additional tones often incorporated in a second row or as additional tone fields.
The choice of tones depends on the tuning and design of the instrument. Standard tunings include various scales such as the Dorian, Lydian or pentatonic scale, which further increases the variety of sounds and styles that can be produced with a handpan.
Our Majesty models have up to 17 tones for a wonderful sound experience.
Are handpans suitable for beginners?
Yes, handpans are good for beginners, especially because of their intuitive playing style and the relatively easy entry options. The sound is often pleasant and soothing, which makes learning even more motivating.
Which handpan for beginners?
For beginners, the Sela Melody Handpans and the cheaper models from ZenDragon.ch are particularly recommended.
Sela Melody handpans are known for their excellent value for money. They offer good sound quality and craftsmanship that is ideal for beginners. They are made of nitrided steel, which produces a percussive sound with clear tones and shorter sustain, ideal for beginners.
Look for handpans with 7 tones, nitrided steel and Dorian tuning to get a good start in the world of handpans.
How do you hold a handpan?
Usually you hold it in your lap or it is mounted on a special structure and you play it standing up.
